Genetics as a possible predictor of the severity of COVID-19

COVID-19 is a highly variable disease, which can be asymptomatic or become extremely serious. The response our body presents to the virus depends on numerous factors, some of which are beginning to be well characterized and are the ones we use in our algorithm . Worldwide data estimate that 1 in 5 people has a condition that places them in the group of people at increased risk of suffering from severe COVID-19.

Current scientific evidence allows defining three levels of conditions that affect the risk and severity of the disease:

It has been scientifically proven that the general characteristics of a person such as age or gender, affect the predisposition to suffer COVID-19. Likewise, some conditions related to the state of health (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, among others) are factors that may imply a greater risk of severity in the case of suffering from COVID-19.

With a quick and easy questionnaire we analyze the influence that your general health status could have on the risk of suffering from COVID-19.

The proper functioning of the immune system depends on having a healthy, varied and balanced diet. We have observed that populations that show a suboptimal diet in certain vitamins and minerals have a higher incidence of infections by SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 virus.

We have developed a protocol for the detection of inadequate intakes of the relevant micronutrients in COVID-19 with which you will be able to know if your diet is correct and to what extent you could improve it.

The characteristics of our DNA make us unique and in this sense, it has been discovered that certain genetic variants can modulate our susceptibility to infection by the COVID-19 virus. There are variants that can facilitate the entry of the virus into our cells, others can make our immune system respond better, others are responsible for the vitamins we ingest are not fully bioavailable, etc.

We have designed a gene panel that allows us to estimate the genetic risk of suffering from the disease and its possible severity. in collaboration with Alimentómica and the Laboratory of Monecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology of the University of the Balearic Islands is developing a tool that allows the evaluation of genetic predisposition to Covid-19, so that they can be maximized and personalized preventive measures, optimizing diet and lifestyle.
